Great advice. I recently did a trip to Italy with my girlfriend and had similar experiences. Also, my social circle, with whom I plan to have trips in the future, comes from various income levels.

Although we could afford bigger and better, we somehow always plan our vacations and trips very minimalistically. We just have so much more fun and mostly see more things if our locations are tinier. We would even sometimes do couchsurfing just for fun.
